Polo Ground State Park Commission - 2004
Polo Grounds Arch
The Sculpture / Signage arch was built by local sculptor Susana
Arias. The idea behind the arch is to have an recognizable shape,
the arch, depicting the past (shadow of the polo rider on a
horse) and the present the bas-relief baseball bats and soccer
ball. The Back of the sculpture is a beautiful composition of
colorful horses, a treat for those who venture to look.
The project was commissioned by the Santa Cruz County Parks and
Recreation Department. It was an open competition to which artists
submitted proposals and Arias?was selected.
The construction of the arch structure, done by Kolb Construction,
consists of four 10 foot deep caissons, an 18 inch deep 6 foot by
7 foot footing and then the 12 foot high poured in place concrete
arch on which the tiles are installed.
